Naming a Pro Sports Franchise and Its Holding Company

Naming · Brand architecture · Executive alignment

The Challenge

An ownership group was launching a women's professional soccer team alongside its existing men's club, and needed two names that could not be solved the same way. The parent holding company had to be city-rooted but sport-agnostic, built for investors and civic partners rather than fans. The team name had to read as a true peer to the established club, not a spin-off or a feminized derivative, and had to feel iconic on day one and still right in twenty years.

The Work

I set the evaluation criteria before any creative went in the room. A name has to be believable coming from this brand, enduring enough to flex as the business grows, easy to say and share, aligned to business goals, and legally defensible. That reframed the review from which one do I like to which one performs, which is the difference between a decision and a debate.

I ran the two briefs separately so neither name got stretched to fit the other, and organized the team candidates into strategic territories so leadership chose a direction before choosing a word. The harder problem was architecture: the men's club held equity in a shared soccer signifier, and I structured the naming system to use it as connective tissue, positioning the two clubs as equal halves of one city's football ecosystem. Every candidate arrived with its shorthand and nickname forms mapped, trademark status checked, and cultural watch-outs flagged.

The Outcome

Leadership moved a shortlist into full legal review with a clear point of view on why each name earned its place, and the engagement advanced into two distinct identity workstreams. More durable than any single name: the group came away with a shared vocabulary for evaluating brand decisions, which is what let the identity work that followed move fast.
